I don't know why it is Americans think we talk like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, but I have never ever heard anyone over here say 'smashingly well'.

Or maybe it's just an affectation that, like the Mosquito, can only be heard by certain people? ;-)

I'm thirty-five and I can hear the screech in the sample just fine. Wow, it is annoying! Maybe it would shoo me away too! My wife, who is six years younger than me, can't hear it though ;-}
