[by Todd] You'll have to forgive me the urge to say I told you so when I read the following:
EMI Music, the world's largest independent record company and Rhythm NewMedia, a mobile advertising company headquartered in Silicon Valley, are collaborating on pioneering advertising-supported mobile video trials with mobile carriers in the United States.
Yep, EMI is going to give you free video content for your cell phone in exchange for embedding a TV-style ad in the stream. Hmm, video as a currency. Why didn't I think of that?
So carriers lose out on download fees, but presumably make it up in fees from Rhythm NewMedia and network usage charges. EMI gets a great new channel to preview its music with a highly influential group. Advertisers get eyeballs focused intently on a little screen. And, best of all, the rest of us get free music on our cell phones.
Just how big a deal is this? Well at this year's Madison + Vine conference John Stratton, CMO at Verizon Wireless CMO, predicted as much as 30% of the $100 billion spent on brand advertising will shift to cell phones. In his speech he laid out an eight-point argument why agencies are in trouble for failing to lead their clients into new avenues.
"Before they figure out where to put their money, your marketer clients will hire and fire agency after agency, seeking someone, anyone, who can tell them where they might go next."
Think anyone is paying attention to this EMI announcement? Think they have a clue how to react?
Nah, what was I thinking?
